Stone Town
Stone Town Alleys
Visitors can explore the heritage and history of the famous Stone Town, now designated a World Heritage Site. This includes visits to the city market, the old Anglican Church located on the site of the old Slave Market Slave Marketand the National Museum of Zanzibar (nominal fee paid by clients if they wish to enter the museum). Later visits to the Old British Consulate, the Old Fort dating back since 1700, House of Wonders and Livingstone House give visitors an insight into Zanzibar's rich history. Leisurely walks through the winding alleys and narrow streets will take you to the small exotic bazaars and local curio shops.

Slave Market

Finally closed down in 1873, after slavery had long been abolished in most of the world, the Slave Market in Zanzibar operated for over 60 years, with an approximate 60,000 slaves passing through the market each year. Opened by Sultan Seyyid in 1811, slave trade boosted Zanzibar's economic status and it soon became East Africa's biggest slaving post. Today, you can visit the market to see where the slaves were held captive before being sold in the open market. Hundreds of slaves were crammed in low ceilinged spaces and most died here due to disease or starvation. The basement area of the market has been well preserved and walking through the slave holds, it's hard not to shed tears at the agony of those poor souls that never saw the light of day. Outside at the exact spot where slaves were chained and then sold to the highest bidder, now stands the Anglican Cathedral. A memorial to the slaves was later constructed in the courtyard of the slave market.

Spice Plantations and Farms
Spice TourVisits to the spice plantations will dazzle your senses with fresh spices. On the way visitors can stop at the old Sultan Rest House to view the Persian Baths built in 1850 by Seyyid Said bin Sultan (first Sultan of Zanzibar) for his wife Princess Shehzard. A unique opportunity to visit the local farms and talk to farmers who will show you the traditional spices and fruits of Zanzibar.
Do the Spice Tour and it turns out to be quite interesting. I never knew there was so much to the old spice thing. I thought it was all about Spice Routes from China to Turkey till now. That and the Schwarz racks you get in Tesco. Live and learn. So see if you can get out to one of the Spice Plantations. Cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices. They can be seen in the plantations just outside Zanzibar Town, and a tour includes opportunities to dazzle the eyes with colour, and to clear the sinuses with fresh niffs. The guides give a detailed description about a variety of spices, and their uses in cooking and cosmetics. So... be fascinated by the sheer number of spices produced and their incredible value for many ailments. The plantations are also cheap (but not tacky) places to purchase spices and spice oils. Forever gone are the days when I only used black pepper and oregano in my baked bean chilli. Oh yes.

Dolphin Tours
One of the Island's most popular excursions, and a unique opportunity to see the numerous dolphins, which inhabit the sea in the southern part of the Isle.

Zanzibar Dolphin Tours

After a transfer to Kizimkazi, visitors can board a local dhow and head off in search of the dolphins. It is important to remember that these beautiful marine creatures are not tame in spite of which they come very close to the boats in large numbers. Snorkeling at these sites is also possible. The return trip includes a visit to the Kizimkazi mosque, believed to be the first mosque in Zanzibar and indeed one of the first in East Africa, which still contains the famous Kufic scripts in its walls.

Jozani Forest
Jozani ForestThe only remaining natural forest on Unguja Island is a heaven for nature lovers! With a rich variety of bird species, Jozani also offers the unique opportunity of seeing the very rare Red Colobus Monkey, which is indigenous to the Island of Zanzibar. The Jozani Natural Forest is in the central east region of Zanzibar island: home to the Red Colobus Monkey. These monkeys are full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve's perimeter and are quite photogenic. So photogenic in fact that my shots of them were total utter garbage. So you lot have to put up with the trees, which incidentally are fascinating to look at in themselves. You can get lifts to the reserve from many places in Stone Town.

Swahili Tour
A wonderful opportunity to meet the local people of the Island in the nearby villages of your hotel. This trip is one of our most popular excursions and it is organized as part of a community.

Visit the homes of the local villagers, see the clinic and meet the children in their school and nursery. This is a unique perspective into the true culture and way of life of Zanzibari people.

The proceeds of the tour go directly to a fund, which we have set up to benefit the village and this is a special way that you can make a connection and assist us in making a difference for the people of Zanzibar.

Deep Sea Fishing
Just of the northern tip of the south east coast of Zanzibar, experienced crew will take you out for half or full day in search of Barracuda, Tuna Fish, and Kingfish and if you are really lucky you may even catch a sailfish or marlin. For the fisherman that got lucky, the Chef will prepare and cook the catch for your dinner.

Prison Islands
Giant Tortoise
A relaxing day is to be had when you visit the small Island off Zanzibar Town. Apart from the Ruins of the Jail that was built in 1893 which was used for quarantine instead, there are giant tortoises of which some are over 100 years old. The Island is excellent for swimming and snorkeling.

Once the site of a gaol for misbehaving slaves, the island lies just off the old stone town. It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkelling, and has a lovely white beach for sun-bathing.

It is also home to a family of giant tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. This island is ideal for a day-trip with refreshments available throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

North Coast Tours
This trip leads you through a spice farm, Mangapwani Slave Caves and Chambers and on to the beautiful white sandy beaches of Nungwi, the most wonderful place to relax and unwind after the dust and humidity of Stone town.
Pack your swim wear and enjoy a cool drink in Paradise!

Diving

Deep Sea DivingThis stunning coral atoll was recently declared a marine conservation area, offering a unique opportunity to both divers and snorkellers to experience the best of Zanzibar’s underwater world.

The surrounding waters are teaming with an overwhelming number of beautiful tropical reef fish, and a wealth of marine creatures, from the majestic whale shark to rare gem-like species of nudibranchs. Large pelagic creatures can often be seen passing by in the blue, and green turtles graze peaceably amongst the heads of plate and honeycomb corals. A resident pod of curious bottle-nosed dolphins offer the chance for visitors to interact with these splendid marine mammals in a natural and spontaneous environment.

Ras Nungwi was instrumental in lobbying the Zanzibar government to establish this marine reserve, and the project has proved a resounding success. A permanent patrol is in place to discourage destructive fishing methods and oversee activities, funded by the fees levied from the divers and snorkellers who visit the atoll. A turtle ‘tag and release’ scheme has been established on the island itself and the nearby village of Matemwe on the Zanzibar coast, with the involvement of local communities, encouraging an unprecedented growth in the numbers of hawksbill and green turtles in Tanzanian waters.

The Mnemba Atoll is relatively sheltered from the winds and currents, and good visibility, ranging from 15m to 30m, can be virtually guaranteed. There are a range of dive sites; sheer drop-offs, such as the Big Wall, ideal for the more experienced aquanaut, drift dives along the western edge, the lunar landscape of Wattabomi, and the fringing reef at Kichwani, whose corals grow just metres from the surface, making perfect for all experience levels. A sandy bottomed shallow lagoon on the southern tip makes the ideal mooring location for snorkellers and is also a prime site for Discover Scuba Diving courses, and novice divers.

Between the months of August and November, and then again in February the Whale - Shark migration brings these magnificent fish close to the shores of Zanzibar.
